ASEAN summits’s Side Event emphasized the role of Circular Economy in driving Low-Carbon and Green Industries in the EEC

Recently, H.E. Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, gave the opening remarks to the seminar during the 35th ASEAN Summit in Thailand on “Circular Economy, Waste Management and Sustainability” held by the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment by Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) or TGO and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the objectives to disseminate

the progress and success of sustainable industrial city development in the EEC aiming to deliver economic, social and environmental sustainability through driving the circular economy, and to share experiences among government agencies, international organizations, private sector, as well as general public, in environmental management, including waste management, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and engagement of local communities in delivering sustainable development at the regional and local levels.

             Dr. Kurujit Nakornthap, Chairman of the TGO Board of Directors, mentioned that “I encourage all of us to see strong engagement of all sectors, including through initiatives and innovations, which demonstrate various efforts, partnerships and collaboration among all sectors in ensuring successful transition towards sustainable development.” Khunying Thongtip Ratanarat, Advisor to the TGO Board of Directors, and Mrs. Prasertsuk Patoonsittichai, the Executive Director of TGO, also participated in the Seminar.
 
            During the session on “Technology, Innovation, and Climate Action Toward Sustainability: From Local to Global”, Dr. Pongvipa Lohsomboon, the Deputy Executive Director of TGO, shared the results of the organization’s study on low-carbon industrial development in the EEC which found that factories in the EEC has a high potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the policy, capacity, finance and technology, as well as, the legal support are among the key enabling environment.

            In addition to the seminar, TGO, UNIDO and various partners also joined in the exhibition, showcasing circular economy and environmental management activities in the EEC, in which TGO provided information to interested participants about the GHG Mitigation Information Platform website (https://lowcarboneec.tgo.or.th/) which compiled and disseminated greenhouse gas emissions reduction activities in the EEC and allowed users to self-assess their factories’ readiness and capacity to reduce emissions. Over 223 representatives from government agencies, international organizations and private sectors participated in the Seminar.
