MNRE; TGO in collaboration with ERCST disseminate the study on the economic impact of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on Thailand

               Bangkok, (11 May 2021): Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) or TGO in collaboration with the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST), an independent consulting from the European Union conduct the public consultation virtual conference on "The Economic Impacts of an EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on Thailand" aims to disseminate knowledge understanding and progress to date on the  EU CBAM as well as the study result on the economic impact of the EU CBAM on target industries to relevant stakeholders for both public and private sector. This virtual seminar intends to enable communication and awareness on CBAM as well as build up the preparedness among stakeholders which could be implemented shortly.

               In this seminar, Mr Kiatchai Mitriwong, the TGO Executive director, was invited as a Chairperson gave his welcome remark to all participants and Mr. Andrei Marcu, Executive Director, and Ms. Alexandra Maratou, Senior Policy Analyst from ERCST has present an overview of the CBAM status and the study result which demonstrate its outcome as follows; 1) an assessment on the carbon intensity of selected products as demonstration case includes, cement, steel, pulp and paper, aluminium and plastic in primary form, 2) an impact on GDP according to the introducing of CBAM to Thai export products to EU, 3) an estimation on the carbon price/additional cost according to the CBAM implementation. However, this CBAM is in the development process and need to conduct a public consultation for comments on its draft. The public consultation process could also allow to challenge on the carbon intensity default values which might be used in account for the additional payment of import products into the EU according to the CBAM. There are 311 participants attend this virtual seminar from both zoom meeting and facebook live (100 participants via zoom and 211 via Facebook live)
