TGO have a meeting with Sukhothai Governor to present the results of the Development of Provincial Greenhouse Gas Reduction.

25 Oct 2021

On 11th of October 2021, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) or TGO by Dr. Pongvipa Lohsomboon, Deputy Director of the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization, Ms. Sumon Sumetchoengprachya, Director Low Carbon City and Society Office together with Ms. Pensri Rakphakwaen, Director of the Regional Environment office 3 (Phitsanulok), Mrs. Prinya Boonsong, Director of the Environment Division, Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment Sukhothai  , and officer met Mr. Viroon Phantevee, Governor of Sukhothai Province to present the results of the Development of Provincial Greenhouse Gas Reduction Guidelines Project.

Results from the project reported that greenhouse gas emissions of Sukhothai Province in 2019 (base year) were 1.64 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). However, its mitigation potential at 2030 is around 0.51 million tCO2e based on 29 mitigation measures. These measures comprise 25 short-term measures (that could be implemented within 1-2 years), 3 medium-term measures (within 3-5 years), and 1 long-term measure (more than 5 years). Sukhothai set up its greenhouse gas reduction target at 23.14 percent by 2030 compared to the base year. Furthermore, from the study of land-use change by satellite imaginary during 2018-2020, it was found that most of Sukhothai’s forest and paddy field areas tended to decline due to the conversion of crops cultivation to corn, sugarcane, and cassava. However, its greenhouse gas sequestration was yet greater than the emissions due to the retainment of forest areas in Srisachnalai District, Thung Saliam District, Ban Dan Lan Hoi District, and Kirimas District.

The Governor of Sukhothai recommended that in addition to setting up the greenhouse gas reduction targets in accordance with the 1st National Determined Contribution (1st NDC) in 2030, the target should be compliance with the 20-Year National Strategy (2018-2037) and be in line with the local lifestyle and national development goals and vision.
