Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization, or TGO, a certified body of Thailand’s carbon credits - under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, collaborates with the Future of the Carbon Market Foundation located in Germany reached the conclusion to provide financial support to Thailand’s voluntary carbon credits for low carbon city programme. Over a year of discussions by these two organizations, the Foundation agrees with TGO to give finance to the local administrative organizations in Thailand if they could generate Thailand’s carbon credit and being certified by TGO. The carbon pricing of the financial support to the local administrative organization will be at 8 Euros per tonne of CO2 equivalent, or per TVERS, which is a type of carbon credit certified by TGO under the scheme called Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction, or T-VER.
Ms. Prasertsuk Patoonsittichai, Executive Director of TGO explained that, “The total budget of financial support is at 1.8 million Euros. The local administrative organization could reach the financial support through developing any greenhouse gas emission reduction projects in 4 eligible activities, either (1) Energy Efficiency via LED changing; or (2) Biogas; or (3) Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF); or (4) Solar Power.
“Once the local administrative organization developed the T-VER project covering eligible activities, and submitted to TGO to endorse the generated TVERS carbon credit, the Foundation will be ready to grant the TVERS carbon credit. The Foundation will provide a support through TGO with regard to “Units of TVERS” that the local administrative organization request for a financial support. TGO will play a vital role in certifying the TVERS carbon credit for the local administrative organization, and the TVERS credit must be certified within the 2015-2020 period.” Ms. Patoonsittichai added.
Therefore, TGO and the Foundation arranged the signing ceremony for launching the cooperation in January 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. This collaboration is an initiative that firstly introduced to Thailand, which its outcomes will be genuinely beneficial for local authorities in Thailand to get support for developing the qualified greenhouse gas reduction projects namely: on energy efficiency via LED light bulb changing for street lights and other buildings; solar power system; waste and wastewater treatment system according to the financial criteria.
