The Winter Olympics: the inevitable impact of global warming

17 Mar 2022

The Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games on 4-20 February 2022 with Winter Dream concept. Chinese government has announced to deliver green and clean through ambitious goal of delivering the environmental friendly games by using renewable energy.

This will be the first in Olympic history that the carbon dioxide trans-critical direct cooling technology will be used for making the ice surface. The new technology has good refrigeration performance and can improve energy efficiency by 40% compared with conventional refrigerant. The winter game has integrated sustainability principles throughout 119 measures under the 12 action plans, aiming to minimize negative impacts of the Games while maximizing their positive impacts.

Although the average temperature in Beijing area is -1 degrees Celsius, but in the mountain area in Yanqing and Zhang Jiao Kou, where the sport of skiing and snowboarding will be taking place. The current Winter Olympics, in Beijing, faces growing concern over its environmental impact. With the ski slopes set in an area that recorded just 5 – 20 cm of snow all year around. This is not the first Winter Olympics to be affected by climate change and The research noted that climate change meant natural snow was becoming less plentiful in many regions of the world, and was reducing the amount of water available for artificial snow, putting the global snow sport industry at risk.

The host country has planned to manage with the climate change impact. In the 2010, Vancouver Winter Olympics, Canada, there was a shortage of snow in the mountains that host skiing and snowboarding as well. The temperature is above 5 degrees Celsius and there is almost no snow added. Therefore, the problem was solved by moving the snow from the top of the mountain to the lower area and put rice straw and timber as a base in many areas before bringing snow to fill the surface. In addition, at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia The temperature is above 10 degrees Celsius, it is the hottest Winter Olympics. Russia had applied the lessons learned from Vancouver Game by hoarding snow in advance. More than 400 snow machines are used to make more than 13 million cubic meters of snow. It uses more than 870 million liters of water to simulate the natural process of snow formation. They also had to stock more than 710,000 cubic meters of snow for 2 years before the Winter Olympics.

The current situation of greenhouse gas emission will cause global temperatures that the Paris Agreement is limit the rising global temperature to well below 2 ˚C, aiming for 1.5 ˚C compared to pre-industrial levels. According to the World Meteorological Organization report, carbon dioxide levels was increased to 413.2 parts per 1 million in 2020, higher than the average of 10 years ago, the University of Waterloo geology report, Of the 21 cities that have hosted the Winter Games in the past, Under the current progression of climate change, 14 cities would be considered “unreliable” and six would be “marginal” in terms of snow safety by the 2080s,

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has plans to solve global warming problems and climate change impact. From 2030, the Winter Olympics hosts will be required to proceed in “Environmental friendly” by reducing greenhouse gas emissions whether directly or indirectly.
