According to the UNEP’s statistics ‘one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute, while up to 5,000,000,000,000 single-use plastic bags are consumed worldwide every year. About 8,000,000 tons of plastic waste is dumped in the ocean annually and marine animals receive toxic chemicals from ingesting plastic waste’.
The MOU signing ceremony among United Nations Development Programme-Thailand (UNDP), CP ALL Public Company Limited and Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) (TGO) took place at Waldorf Astoria Bangkok Hotel on 10 July 2019.
Mr. Korsak Chairasmisak, Chairman of Executive Committee of CP ALL delivered the opening remark, followed by speeches from Mr. Renaud Meyer, Resident Representative of UNDP Thailand, Mrs. Prasertsuk Patoonsittichai, Executive Director of TGO and Mr. Suwit Kingkaew, Chairman of the Sustainable Development Sub-Committee, CP ALL.
The MOU promotes partnership among the Royal Thai Government, private sector and international organization focuses on greenhouse gas emission reduction through sustainable urban management system under the umbrella of the GEF funded project on Achieving Low Carbon Growth in Cities through Sustainable Urban Systems Management in Thailand. CP ALL shows a strong intention to help reducing plastic waste, enhancing energy efficiency, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in 5 pilot cities, namely Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phuket and Koh Samui.
Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) as the Implementing Partner of the Achieving Low Carbon Growth in Cities through Sustainable Urban Systems Management in Thailand funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) commits to collaborate with CP All and UNDP in driving efforts to meet the objectives of the MOU.
